SEASPAR offers new weight training, power lifting programs

SEASPAR, a Downers Grove-based special recreation organization, is offering two programs specifically for individuals with disabilities interested in improving their health and increasing strength through working out with weights.

The weight training program will soon begin its second season, while the power lifting program hopes to attract these athletes and others to the competitive side of weight lifting.

The weight training program is held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. from Feb. 9 through May, at the Lisle Community Center.

Staff members complete training/workout logs each week to keep track of each participant’s progress and weight loss. Each person has take-home exercises, allowing them to continue exercising in the comforts of their homes.

The program begins with a 10-minute elliptical or treadmill workout, followed by training with weight machines and free weights.

Power lifting athletes will work on their flexibility, endurance, strength, and learn proper technique for the bench press and deadlift as two of the competitive lifts at Special Olympics. The program is open to ages 16 and up, regardless of experience, strength, gender, and ability.

Sure shot ways to burn fat, fast!

Cardio exercises

Cardios are the best form of exercise for beginners. There is no refuting the fact that to blast calories you need to break a sweat. A lean body can never be yours without sweating out the excess flab. And cardio exercises help you achieve just that; they boost your stamina, make you energetic and flexible to take up an even rigorous fitness regime. Running on the treadmill, cross-trainer, cycling, swimming and skipping are the most popular forms of cardio. While a treadmill exercises the whole body, cross-trainers are for the hips and thighs. You can even go for the cycling option at a gym; there are two kinds of cycles, one for thighs and the other for thighs and stomach.

Diet

Once you have set up a routine, gradually cut down on red meat, fries, butter, cheese and junk food of every kind. Take a good dose of water depending on your body requirement. Coconut water and fresh fruit juices too can be taken post meals.

Spinning

One might complain of lack of variety in a spinning class, as the exercise routine can get a tad monotonous. However, spinning is a wonderful way to burn calories and keeps your muscles toned. Agreed, cycling in the open is a far viable option as it lets you enjoy the local sights and take in fresh air, but rainy season and foggy winters can put a dampener on your fitness schedule. Request your trainer to come up with varied routines to keep up the interest. At a spinning studio, with the help of background music and varied lighting, a soothing and happy atmosphere is recreated. Not to mention, spinning works best when alternated with cardio exercises. It helps lose fat and build muscles. You can do 30-45 minutes of non-stop spinning once in eight days, if you are combining it with cardio.

Diet

Food intake should be half of your normal diet. You can consume small portions of all kinds of food you like, but say no to fries, butter and cheese.

Trapeze workout

The form of workout is named after the lesser-known trapeze muscle which all of us have, but isn’t very prominent. Trapeze muscles are connected at either ends to the collar bone and hence move parts of the skeleton. Little wonder, fitness addicts and body builders sport such a neat shoulder and neck line. To chisel out your trapeze muscles, the ‘Dumbbell shrugs’ and ‘Barbell shrugs’ are most effective. The former flexes your side form, while the latter is for the front form. It is to be noted that trapeze exercises are not for beginners, as it requires an already lean body. A few months of rigorous cardio and spinning can have you ready for trapeze. Outside of building swoon-worthy muscles, it helps keep sinus and cervical disorders at bay. A healthy trapeze routine requires each body part be exercised twice a week.

The Calorie: Your Weight-Loss Best Friend, Part Deux

gty fruit veggies jef 120117 wblog The Calorie: Your Weight Loss Best Friend, Part Deux

                                                                                                                              Getty Images

“Good Morning America” health contributor Diane Henderiks reports:

The final paragraph of my article last week titled  ”The Calorie – Your Weight-Loss Best Friend” begins with “Not all calories are created equal and the quality of your calories is very important (that will be a whole other article).”

Well, here’s the whole other article, which makes this Part II and they work as a team, like pbj (all natural, of course). I suggest you read both so follow this link to Part I.

OK, so you’ve taken my suggestion, clicked the link above, did a little math and calculated your ballpark calorie level.  Now put that number “in the vault” and draw on it from time to time for a calorie reality check.

Now, let’s discuss just where your calories should come from because the quality of the calories you consume is extremely important. You can eat only soda and butter every day and lose weight if you consume it in the right calorie amount, but is this healthy for you?  Of course not, and don’t try that at home.

If you want to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, choose foods that are as close to their natural state as possible and are unprocessed.  Select a variety of the following nutrient-rich foods as your source of calories and as the foundation of your diet:

Fruits

Vegetables

Lean meat, poultry  and fish (trimmed of fat)

Legumes and Beans

Nuts and seeds

Unsaturated fats

Whole grains

Low-Fat Dairy

Some of you are thinking, carrots have sugar, don’t they? Pineapples are loaded with sugar, right? Potatoes are high in sugar, right?  My response: It’s not the fruits and veggies that are hindering your weight loss. Think about it.

I believe that the key to achieving and maintaining  a healthy weight is to eat the right quantity of the right foods. Of course, there are times when cheesecake, wine, cookies, ice cream and French fries are taunting you, so what do you do? Take a forkful, spoonful, small glass, small bite or just a few to satisfy that craving then carry on with your daily routine.

In my experience, those who tend to lose weight and keep it off do the following:

  1. Are motivated to be healthy not skinny, and motivation is the starting point for change.
  2. Let their intelligence determine food choices, not fleeting cravings.
  3. Eat a variety of healthy foods from all food groups.
  4. Eat breakfast, smaller meals and smart snacks between meals every day.
  5. Are aware of foods that they have a difficult time limiting portions so they avoid eating them.
  6. Exercise (mostly walking) everyday for at least 45 minutes.
  7. Cook or, at the very least, attempt to cook most meals at home.
  8. Indulge in their favorite sweets on occasion.
  9. Do not reward themselves with food.
  10. Don’t beat themselves up when they overindulge or make a not-so-healthy choice.  They get right over it and move on instead of having a momentary slip up turn into a weeklong binge-fest.

Now take these ideas and put them to the test.  Weight loss does not happen overnight so take it day by day. Patience is definitely a virtue in your quest to live a healthier lifestyle.  You might (and most likely will) have your ups and downs and that’s OK.  Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and move on. Go for it and keep us posted.

Bet Big On New Targeted Male Market And Programs From Weight Watchers

As competition in the weight loss market heats up, Weight Watchers International (WTW) is bringing new marketing ideas in to help grow the company’s number of customers. Weight Watchers has been successful at targeting women with its weight loss Points Plus program, but recently has launched a massive advertising program aimed at men who want to lose weight. This targeted market along with a new smartphone application and relationships with workplaces have Weight Watchers looking like the weight loss company to beat.

Weight Watchers was founded in 1963 by a homemaker of the name Jean Nidetch. Over the years the weight loss program has changed but most recently revolves around the Points Plus system of placing point values on food items. Each person on the diet is allowed a certain amount of points each day based on weight, height, age, and physical activities. Up until recently the company’s main target demographic was older women. Through new programs the company now has been gaining market share among men and younger women. The company is stepping up its game in targeting males with a targeted website to try its weight loss program.

Weight loss companies usually use testimonials, whether ordinary people or celebrities, to showcase results to American’s through print or television advertisements. Weight Watcher’s current male spokesperson is Charles Barkley. Once known as the “Round Mound of Rebound”, Barkley was a dominant physical presence around the hoop in basketball games. The commercials featuring Barkley utilize the “Lose Like a Man” game plan the company has devised. The former NBA star has lost over thirty pounds while being a paid spokesperson for Weight Watchers.

Weight Watcher competitor Nutrisystem (NTRI) currently uses Janet Jackson and Terry Bradshaw as its company spokeswoman and spokesman respectively. Nutrisystem had Dan Marino as a former spokesman and has used former athletes and males for several years to target both sexes trying to lose weight. The competition is still fierce in the weight loss market and Weight Watchers needs to continue growing and appealing customers away from other competing companies.

Another new initiative of Weight Watchers involves an application for smart phones including Apple iPhones (AAPL) and Android (GOOG) phones. Weight Watchers introduced an application that acts as a barcode scanner to help with meal decisions. Customers can scan any item with the application and receive the number of Points Plus points immediately available on the phone. The application will help users make smarter decisions when it comes to grocery shopping decisions. Chief Executive Officer David Kirchhoff recently discussed the application while at the JPMorgan (JPM) Global Healthcare Conference.

Weight Watchers has also made a push into the corporate healthcare world. Health premiums have risen for corporations around the United States, as CEO Kirchhoff pointed out. The company recently announced deals with the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and American Express (AMX). Under the deals the companies are paying for 100% and 50% of Weight Watchers costs respectively. The deals provide employees with access to Weight Watchers programs and meetings in an attempt to create healthier workers and cut down on health insurance premiums. It should come as no surprise that workplaces are accepting Weight Watchers programs. As CEO Kirchhoff pointed out, his company offers a high return on investment as $18.95 a month for Weight Watchers to help get fit is cheaper than high health care costs.

Weight Watchers is not a dieting company that offers food products to its customers. The company serves as a teaching tool to its targeted market. While several food items are available with the Weight Watchers brand, the company differentiates itself by endorsing food items like several from DineEquity’s (DINE) Applebee’s Restaurants. Weight Watchers enjoys operating margins of 29%, compared to rival Nutrisystem’s 8%.

The push into the men’s weight loss market will be heavily marketed. Weight Watchers has been rolling out commercials featuring Charles Barkley and placing them prominently on male driven television stations including: ESPN, Spike, and Comedy Central. Shares of the weight loss company traded as high as $87 in the last fifty two weeks, back in May.

Keep an eye on subscription numbers and earnings reports throughout the year. The company has plenty of room to grow as its customers shrink.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.

Burning brown fat to be slimmer has a hitch

Men burn brown fat for energy only when they’re chilled, researchers have found.

Scientists and drug companies are interested in finding way to increase the amount of brown adipose tissue, also called brown fat, in adults in the hopes of fighting obesity.

They knew that rodents and newborn babies burn calories from brown fat to keep warm. Animals and newborns don’t shiver.

Adults are now known to also carry brown fat, but a big question for obesity researchers was whether that fat actually burns energy.

Scientists in Quebec designed an experiment to find out.

André Carpentier at Sherbrooke University and Denis Richard at Laval University in Quebec City studied six healthy men aged 23 to 42 who wore a water-cooled suit. The experimental set-up was meant to minimize shivering.

When the investigators exposed the men to a radioactive chemical, they found the radioactivity disappeared from the brown fat in just minutes, but the radioactivity wasn’t metabolized in the warm subjects.

“However, it remains to be demonstrated whether chronic and frequent bouts of cold exposure may contribute to increase [brown fat metabolism] and/or activity and may be a viable adjunct therapeutic strategy to other lifestyle interventions to prevent or treat obesity and its metabolic complications,” they concluded in Tuesday’s issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

In a journal commentary published with the study, Barbara Cannon and Jan Nedergaard at Stockholm University in Sweden said that increasing the amount of brown fat a person has is unlikely to make him or her slimmer. Instead, what’s needed is a way to make that brown fat actively burn calories.

“What we have to wish for is not only more brown adipose tissue in adult humans — but that it would actually be ‘on fire’ when we eat,” the commentators said.

The researchers acknowledged drawbacks of the study. For example, they were unable to tell whether brown fat was metabolically active during cold conditions in other internal organs such as the heart because of the limited view of the PET/CT scanner.

The scientists took body mass index and diabetes into account, but they said the wide differences in brown fat metabolism they observed suggests that other unknown factors could be important, too.

The study was funded by the Canadian Diabetes Association.

No quick fix for lasting weight loss

Anja Bath, a nutritionist with the Ecotrophologists Association, a group of home economists and nutritionists in Germany, says beware. ‘Quick results don’t count when it comes to losing weight. It’s important to change one’s habits,’ she added.

Making lasting changes to one’s eating habits is the only way to stay slim, Bath said, pointing out that so-called crash diets were merely a short-term fix and basically changed nothing. Often they lead to a ‘yo-yo effect’ in which all of the lost weight – or even more – is regained in a short time.

Dietary advisor Sonja Mannhardt sees another danger: ‘Abnormal, diet-induced eating habits are a growing risk.’ Slimming diets put the body under stress and disrupt its system of hunger and satiety. It is best to learn the body’s signals in this regard both before and during a weight loss programme, she said, because ‘self-examination is very important, if sometimes unpleasant.’

Dietary experts recommend keeping a diary as a first step. ‘You’ve got to write down everything that you eat so as to note the current situation’ for analysis by an expert, Bath said. ‘Sometimes a single nutrition counselling session is all that’s needed to effect a change.’ After this, she said, it is important to set realistic weight loss goals and be happy with even partial successes, which increases the chances of staying motivated.

Help is also offered via the internet, but the self-proclaimed helpers found there are not always reputable. ‘Promises such as losing 10 kilograms in just a week are plain humbug,’ said Nicole Merbach of Stiftung Warentest, a German consumer protection organization.

A diet plan, she said, should be verifiably based on scientific findings as well as practicable. How time-consuming is it? How difficult is preparation of the recipes? Are the ingredients easy to obtain?

No diet plan, however, is a final, permanent solution to a person’s weight problems, Bath noted, although ‘there are diets you can use to get started.’ At best, she said, they can help in undertaking a fundamental change of eating habits.

Experts agree that in order to lose weight successfully, a person must not only change his or her eating habits but also get sufficient exercise. But dieters who want to accelerate weight loss by means of exercise ought not pay too much attention to which sorts of exercise burn the most calories.

‘To a large extent, metabolism doesn’t result directly from physical activity but also takes place when the body is at rest,’ explained Ingo Froboese, a professor at the Health Centre of the German Sport University in Cologne.

Berlin – The hips have put on padding over the holidays and the new year began with a resolution to remove it. At the turn of the year, motivation to lose weight is greatest. Weighing The Options, Which Weight Loss Procedure Is Best?

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)–An estimated 220,000 Americans have weight loss surgery every year. That’s double the number of a decade ago. There are two common types of procedures, and a new study has found that one may be more effective.

Many obese patients choose gastric banding surgery for weight loss. It is a simpler operation than gastric bypass surgery .

But a new study of the two popular procedures shows that gastric bypass patients lose weight more quickly and keep it off longer.

Bypass surgery can be more risky in the short run, but research shows that there are significantly more long-term complications and re-operations after gastric banding.

Vonett Trotman told CBS2′s Dr. Max Gomez that she struggled with serious weight problems and was diagnosed with high blood pressure. The diagnoses prompted her to undergo a gastric banding procedure.

“I was so heavy, when I went to the doctor, no scale would be able to tell me my weight,” she said.

Doctors put an adjustable band around the very top part of her stomach. The band limits the amount that a person can eat. Rotman thought that the band was the safest option, but years later she had to have the band removed.

Trotman wasn’t losing any weight and she began to experience chest pains.

Her experience was not unusual.

Nearly half of patients who chose gastric banding were still obese after six years, according to a study in the Archives of Surgery. Patients also had more long-term problems and follow-up operations than those who had gastric bypass surgery.

A gastric bypass involves using staples to create a small stomach pouch to re-route food around a section of the small intestine.

The study found that people who had gastric bypass surgery lost more weight more quickly  and kept it off longer than those who had the band.

Bariatric surgeon Dr. Mitchell Roslin says that there’s a reason that bypass patients may have better results. Roslin is the Head of Obesity Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital.

“When we actually remove part of the stomach we change the hormones that control hunger and fullness and we change people’s relationship with food,” he said.

Trotman regrets choosing the gastric band.

“It was a big mistake. It was an experience that I learned from but  it was a big mistake ,” she said.

Trotman underwent gastric bypass in the fall and has lost 77lbs, with diet and exercise she plans to lose even more.

The study found that the risk of a deadly complication was somewhat greater with the gastric bypass surgery than with banding, but the researchers concluded that the benefits outweigh the risks.

Applied Nutriceuticals Launches Fat Burning Supplement Fat Free™

Dietary supplement company, Applied Nutriceuticals, launches Fat Free™, a new thermogenic and anti-catabolic fat burner that uses genetic mapping to eliminate fat while preventing lean muscle loss.

Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) January 24, 2012

Applied Nutriceuticals officially launched its new fat burning supplement, Fat Free™, on January 16, 2012. Fat Free stimulates a powerful muscle-sparing effect that is specifically designed to stop the yo-yo effect while significantly increasing the body’s metabolism and provide clean, jitter-free energy. Don Orrell, President of Applied Nutriceuticals says, “One of the biggest problems with most common fat burners is they rely on heavy stimulants and not much else. Fat Free also provides incredible energy, but the real science is about how well it helps maintain lean muscle. This is the secret to long-term success, and it’s going to revolutionize the industry…there’s already more buzz on this product than Tim Tebow!”

Applied Nutriceuticals’ Fat Free supplement contains ursolic acid, which has been shown to help maintain lean muscle mass and burn fat faster. According to a recent clinical study conducted by The University of Iowa’s Medical School, skeletal muscle tissue weight was 14 percent higher in the ursolic group vs. the control group. Furthermore, the ursolic group saw a fat cell diameter 30 percent lower and a belly fat weight 25 percent lower than the control group.

Fat Free provides all of these key elements to obtaining a fit, trim, hard body:

  •     Decreases building blocks of “bad” fats in the blood system

  •     Maintains lean muscle that helps burn calories
  •     Suppresses cravings that derail even the most diligent dieters
  •     Delivers a powerful energy boost without use of harsh stimulants
  •     Continues to work effectively for longer than other fat burners

Applied Nutriceuticals uses the most advanced technology and research techniques possible to produce effective sports nutrition supplements for males between ages 16-35. All Applied Nutriceuticals supplements are produced in house in Charlotte, NC – as opposed to many companies who use overseas contract manufacturers. “The company is completely vertically integrated from its sourcing of raw materials to the final finished product,” says Dirk Tanis, COO, chief formulator co-founder of Applied Nutriceuticals. “Plus, we perform rigorous quality control testing on every lot to ensure the safety and efficacy of every single bottle that comes out of our facility. Not many other companies can say that.”
