SEASPAR offers new weight training, power lifting programs

SEASPAR, a Downers Grove-based special recreation organization, is offering two programs specifically for individuals with disabilities interested in improving their health and increasing strength through working out with weights.

The weight training program will soon begin its second season, while the power lifting program hopes to attract these athletes and others to the competitive side of weight lifting.

The weight training program is held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. from Feb. 9 through May, at the Lisle Community Center.

Staff members complete training/workout logs each week to keep track of each participant’s progress and weight loss. Each person has take-home exercises, allowing them to continue exercising in the comforts of their homes.

The program begins with a 10-minute elliptical or treadmill workout, followed by training with weight machines and free weights.

Power lifting athletes will work on their flexibility, endurance, strength, and learn proper technique for the bench press and deadlift as two of the competitive lifts at Special Olympics. The program is open to ages 16 and up, regardless of experience, strength, gender, and ability.
